No longer needed, due to having curbside compost pickup-- LippeLippe - 25 Jan 2010
Compost Runner
Compost is collected from the bathroom in the white square tofu bins on the right.
2 drop-offs/week is recommended during warm months.
Collecting & Transporting
Condense the bins (ie. take 4 half full ones and make it into 2) in the bathroom, and it's off to the drop-off.
Bike: Two bins will fit on some bike's handlebars. Or if you have a basket you may be able to carry one in it.
Careful though a busted bin in the street would just be a bloody mess.
Handtruck (in basement): Easily handle 2 bins, possibly 3.
"Wagon" (Low plastic dolly with handle, in basement):
Handles 2 bins.
Compost Drop-off Locations
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Farmer's Market, Union Square near Park and 17th.
Saturday: Farmer's Market, Union Square near USW and 14th.
Sunday: Lower East Side Ecology, Garden on 7th between B&C northside.
All drop-off locations close at 5pm.
Cleanup
When I get back with the empty bins I put the mesh drain catcher in the sink. I do a quick hot water rinse and dump that, then fill with hot water to about 1/5 with some dish soap. Swish around and use a sponge if necessary. The tops may need a rinse as well. Then I do a cold water quick rinse of the bins.
After the bins are clean I stack them next to the sink. Next to that (nearer to the door) I put one capped empty one on the floor,
then put another empty one on top lined with a large bag (look in the bins in front of the window, if you are looking at the paper towel holder, look left).
After I rinse the sink, I tap what's caught in the drain catcher into the newly lined bin and lightly cap.
Rather than pull out the mop, I use a paper towel to catch any splash that's hit the floor.
I swipe it around with my foot and take a look behind the bins to make sure there isn't anything good for the critters.
Tips:
- Make sure the tops are on tight before moving them out of the bathroom.
- To unlid a pesky bin, step on one side and pull from the other.
- Bring a paper towel when you go to drop-off, your hands may get messy, and after you use it, it can be tossed into the compost.
- If you have room in the bins before you go, take a look at the 1/2 price bin and toss in anything unsaleable..
