How to close the store

Cover the produce with plastic bags
This should be done before turning off the lights so that you can see what you are doing. The black garbage bags to the right of the produce case should be laid across the top of each shelf of produce. This is easiest done from the bottom up. This helps the produce keep its moisture overnight and keeps light off the produce in the morning before the store opens.
Change the water in the tofu bucket
Keep the lid partially closed when draining the water out. Fill with enough water to submerge the tofu, and use filtered water from the side tap on the sink. If this makes the bucket too heavy, fill it halfway, lift out of sink and then add water using a clean container.
Vacuum, sweep, mop the floor
Take out garbage, recycling & compost (Can be done any time after 5pm)
- Compost (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
Unlock the chain attached the store gate using the keys in the drawers under the register.
Wheel the compost bin out in front of the store, loop the chain through the bar on the rear of the compost bin.
- Garbage (Every night)
Consolidate the garbage from near the register and the bathroom. Place it on the curb to left of right of the tree.
Check to see if any of the boxes stacked on top or to the right of the produce cooler are waxed. Waxed boxes should be bundled and placed with the rest of the garbage.
- Recycling (Every night)
Check for recyclable jugs, jars, and pails hiding out in the bathroom, possibly on the drying racks.
In clear bags, collect glass and plastic from the bins under the bulk flours/pastas. Collect paper in a separate bag.
Bundle cardboard boxes.
Place all recycling on the curb opposite the garbage.
Turn off electric things (Leave on AC, fan, computers)
- Produce refrigerator light
The light switch for the produce refrigerator is located near the top of the left inside wall.
- Juice refrigerator light
The light switch for the juice refrigerator is a thin black switch, located on the inside frame of the right hand door.
(Do not turn off the switch accessible on the left hand door).
- Register, monitor, radio, speakers
Turn the register key to "off" to shut off its power and turn off the monitor on the computer (right most button). Turn off the radio, by flipping the switch to Tape, and turn off the speakers, by pressing the Power switch on the Speaker Volume device. Do not turn off the air conditioners, fan or computers.
Lock the store.
There are three padlocks and pins in the wire basket on the radiator by the door. These are always left unlocked. If they are locked, open them with the emergency set kept @ Cuppa Cuppa (75 East 4th Street).
You should not need keys for closing.
- Using the long metal hook (usually on the coat hooks), lower the large gate completely, and the door gate 1/2 way.
- Return the metal hook to the coat hooks.
- Use two padlocks to secure the large gate.
This is done by inserting the pin and then using the lock to secure the inserted pin.
You may have to wiggle the pin around or lift the gate a half an inch to make it fit.
- When leaving, pull down the door gate (now easily reached by hand)
Lock it with one pin/padlock on the right hand side (when facing the store).
The left side of the door does not need a lock.
See the
illustrated guide to closing the gates.
Emergency closing
Following shift hasn't shown up, and you have to leave?
- Post to the list (if you're subscribed), someone may be able to stop by and cover.
- Look in the member directory, give the following shift a call/email - maybe they're just late, and you'll be able to stick it out.
Ok, nobody can come, you have to close:
- Flip the open/closed sign over.
- Bring the sign in from in front of the store.
- Arrange the clock hands on the closed sign to show when the next shift starts. There is a laminated generic apology note that can be attached right over the sign so the clock shows through, found in the drawer with the keys.
- Lock up! (see directions above)
